So, the premiere finally aired. Even though the season is late starting this year, it doesn't feel all that long ago that season 4 ended.

I think this was my favorite WC premiere. A lot happened, and it really furthered the plot. I'm really excited for this season.

My (mostly stream-of-consciousness) thoughts:

- I was totally confused at first why the recap showed scenes from the pilot. I was like, surely they can trust us to know the premise by now. Then I remembered that Curtis Hagen is back.

- They really went through the Peter-in-prison part quickly. I've gotta admit, I kind of wanted to see more Peter prison angst.

- I'm kind of surprised Neal was allowed to see Peter, let alone in a private visiting room like that. Then again, Peter might have closed visits because he'd be in protective housing, maybe. But I don't expect a lot of prison realism from White Collar.

- Really, Neal? "Justice will prevail"? Dude, you went after Fowler with a gun. Since when do you trust the justice system?

- Whoa, they actually made Diana pregnant! I saw spoilers that someone was going to be pregnant, and I wondered, because Marsha Thomason was pregnant until June. But I dismissed it because making Diana pregnant feels so out-of-nowhere. She never said anything about it! And she's far along now? How long was she hiding her pregnancy? Seven months? And didn't she just break up with Christie not that long ago? This has got to be the strangest plot development WC has had in a while. Wouldn't it have been simpler to hide Marsha's pregnancy? Oh well, at least Elizabeth isn't pregnant. I was really hoping that it wouldn't be her. I like her and Peter without kids.

- I love that Mozzie has figured out how to crack the anklet. Of course he'd be working on that.

- But really, Mozzie? A road trip up the Jersey shore? Can't remember the episode, but Mozzie once complained about going into NJ. Since when is Moz pro-NJ? Do they have something he wants to steal?

- Forging his father's confession is definitely tough for Neal. But it speaks to how much more he sees Peter as family.

- Though, I have to question why he needs Hagen's help once he has the forged confession. I guess Hagen made sure that the DA didn't question the evidence too much.

- It's so awesome to see Peter freed!

- LOL at Neal sitting at Peter's desk.

- "It's not Neal's." I love that line. If Diana's baby were Neal's, I think that would be too much for Peter to take in.

- Yay! Peter's getting Hughes' old job! He totally deserves it. This josses my WC big bang fic, but oh well. :P I wonder what happened to Calloway. It's also a nice twist on last season, where he wasn't offered the job and felt a bit snubbed. This season, he's back in the Bureau's good graces--but the events of last season were a warning that Neal's antics could jeopardize his career. And he's starting to realize that his success may be contingent on having some emotional distance from Neal.

- Neal really looks uncomfortable when Peter praises him for freeing him the "right" way. You can tell Neal isn't happy about how he had to get Peter freed.

- Ooh, Hagen, you did not just diss the Welsh!

- Mozzie has an inner fire-bug? That sounds ominous....

- Poor Mozzie, wanting to use the diversion as a chance to share his conspiracy "truths."

- Yay! Fireman!Neal! I'd seen the set photos of him dressed as a fireman, but I didn't know that was in the premiere.

- Mozzie has such a hard time restraining himself around that police negotiator woman. Poor guy--he wants to hear about the Vatican hording alien technology.

- I think I ship Mozzie and that Police woman. She understands him! Or, at least, Mozzie would like to believe she does.

- Neal looks so tense when he's almost caught.

- Of course Peter was going to start investigating the stolen coins. That was totally coming back to bite Neal in the butt. It's sad that it may be their last "real" case together.

- Neal looks so guilty in the conference room.

- And now Peter has a BMW. Quite the perk, there. At least we'll be getting some classier product placement.

- Poor Probie. How does Neal steal his whisk and then get back over the truck so quickly? And ouch, way to almost burn the guy's eyebrows off, Neal. Starting fires isn't cool.

- LOL at the guy throwing Peter's jacket on the fire, though. Hope Peter didn't have his wallet or badge in there.

- I love the visual of Neal pouring the coins down the fire hose. And Mozzie using the baby buggy.

- To be honest, I'm glad that Peter is onto Neal. He's too smart to be fooled for long. On one hand, it's a little old after season three and season four. But on the other hand, I'm not really bothered by it.

- Peter's in a difficult position right now, and I'm not sure entirely how I feel about it. I think being arrested for murder was the straw that broke the camel's back for Peter--Neal is great, and Peter cares about him, but he's brought a lot of drama into Peter's life. And I think rather than blaming Neal, Peter mostly blames himself--to some extent, he's enabled Neal to keep taking risks, and he's put his judgment on hold a few times (like with James). While he cares about Neal, he can't really put him above everything else.

- I also have mixed feelings about his final conversation with Neal. Some of it feels like a major regression on Peter's part, but I think that's part of the point. It seems a bit out of character for Peter to call Neal a criminal, but I'm not sure he really believes that about Neal. Peter is torn between being a friend and mentor to Neal and doing his job which, unfortunately, means enforcing the rules with Neal and being willing to lock him up if he breaks the law. But I think Peter also wants to give Neal some benefit of the doubt still--he realizes, at least, that Neal wouldn't steal those coins without a reason. I think Peter was wrong in some regards. I don't think it's quite fair to tell Neal he's a criminal, especially since he has changed. He doesn't break the law for his personal gain anymore. And Neal is understandably upset. But Peter also has a point that neither he nor Neal are going to be totally "free" until Neal finishes his sentence. Until then, Peter is sort of like Neal's parole officer. I hope Peter will find a way to strike a more happy medium. Right now, he's in defense mode, which is understandable after getting out of jail.

- Neal's in a big mess with Hagen now. It'll be interesting to see how he gets out of this.

- The fact that Neal is being blackmailed to basically undo his and Peter's first case together has a touch of tragedy to it. It both takes us back to season one and symbolizes the uncertainty of Peter and Neal's relationship at the moment.

I'm really excited for this season. While part of me kind of wishes that we weren't starting out with conflict between Peter and Neal, I don't really mind it. And I'm excited about Peter getting the promotion! I had high hopes for this premiere, and it pretty much delivered.

Such good point about their ' last case' being the undermining of their first one, I like that twist. I didn't think about it until I read your comments!

Thanks. Yeah, it's interesting how this season is harkening back to season 1.
