White Collar 5x02
Oct. 24th, 2013 10:04 pmThere was a lot going on in this episode. Not sure I can keep it all straight in my head. But I'll do my best:
- I love dancing Neal. He looks good here. And director!Mozzie is great fun. I wonder where they're supposed to be rehearsing those moves...was it supposed to be a room in June's house, or was it supposed to be another location?
- I love Neal and Mozzie's banter. And LOL at Neal rubbing Mozzie's head.
- Wow, the boardroom is packed. We usually don't see that many agents.
- Jones and Diana are unusually terse with Neal about his lateness and interruptions. Usually they're much nicer to him, even when expressing frustration. Diana has an excuse, I guess. Pregnant Diana is even more formidable than usual.
- I find the way the new handler has been introduced very interesting. The articles that came out prior to the show's premiere really played up his youth and handsomeness, and the show seems to be, too, with Neal expecting a stodgy middle-aged guy and getting Siegel instead. It feels a little homoerotic. It feels like how they would set up a potential love-interest if Siegel were a female character. Neal's look at Siegel when they first meet even looks a little bit like attraction. It's very interesting.
- Heh, Siegel definitely knows how to play to Neal's vanity.
- But I'm glad Neal doesn't actually fall for it too much. He's obviously learned something since Copycat Caffrey.
- The case of the week is surprisingly timely, considering the real-life shutdown of that Silk Road website recently.
- And now Neal is appealing to Siegel's vanity, telling him he can pass as a designer. :P He does seem a bit more fashionable than Peter.
- Who's that woman hanging around Mozzie's warehouse/store? Does Mozzie have an assistant? Mozzie seems like he'd be terrible to work for. He seems like he'd be ridiculously picky.
- Neal seems very calm about Mozzie being found.
- Ew, Mozzie pulled out his own teeth? Ouch.
- LOL, the fire alarm pull starts a fire.
- And here we get a glimpse of Mozzie's inner firebug that he referred to last week.
- I wonder what Peter and company would do, exactly, if Neal was honest about it being Mozzie. Peter seems to operate under a "don't ask, don't tell" rule with Mozzie. He must know that does illegal stuff, but if he knows specifics, it's sort of hard to give Mozzie immunity. But I can't see him being too quick to pursue Mozzie if he knew the truth. Maybe he could have dissuaded Siegel?
- I like Neal's trick with the sketches.
- LOL at Statue of Liberty Mozzie.
- I wonder what Mozzie's "actual houses" are. What does he do with them? Just keep them? Let them out? Can you imagine having Mozzie as a landlord?
- I love bored!Neal driving Siegel crazy. Feet on the desk, flipping paperclips. He's making himself comfortable.
- Wow, stealing a dead body? That's...kind of morbid.
- I love the mechanical monkey typing on the computer.
- When Siegel talks about sending his old CI back to prison, I wonder if Peter is starting to think about some of the deeper implications of his effort to create some distance. He wants to protect both himself and Neal by creating an environment where Neal has more accountability. His reasoning (which isn't wrong) is that their close relationship may have created some permissiveness, and that Neal might feel on some level that he can get by with stuff because Peter doesn't want to see him go back to prison (I don't think Neal consciously feels that way, or he wouldn't go through so much effort to hide what he does, but Peter might worry about that becoming an issue). The problem is, by creating distance and handing judgement over to someone else, he's also making it more likely that Neal will go back to prison if he slips up. And Siegel doesn't really have any reason to give Neal or Mozzie leeway. And while Peter might think this makes it easier if he's not directly involved, I think he might be finding that that isn't the case.
- It's rough seeing Diana so worn out, but still fighting and doing everything she can to keep going. It's totally understandable that she doesn't want people to think she can't do her job anymore, and Jones brings up an excellent point that having the baby won't totally put an end to that concern. There's some risk of people treating her differently because she's a mother (and a single mother), even if they don't realize they're doing it.
- I love that she goes to Neal hoping he'll bend the rules with her a bit, though. :P
- I love Mozzie's little lair. I wonder how long he was planning on staying down there?
- I knew something was going to happen with Diana once she started holding her stomach. I felt for her, because it's a really tough situation for her to be in. Being tough and independent is so important to her, and going into labor while trying to make an arrest (and then having to rely on Mozzie for help) is pretty bad. But! I love that Mozzie stuck around to help and that they ended up coming together a bit over the experience.
- And I love the idea of midwife Mozzie! LOL at Mozzie calling himself an "expert." I have a hard time imagining that he has any prior experience delivering babies, unless his story about delivery a baby in his cab was true. :P Maybe he got an online degree with midwifery at some point. I wonder if he'll try to add this to his long list of jobs now. :P
- As for Neal, that's got to be the coolest way of dodging security cameras. But how does he avoid the cameras when he's leaving? He runs off way too quickly to have avoided them completely. Did he just have to take the risk with Peter so close?
- It's sad to see Neal destroy the evidence from his and Peter's first case. That was a big accomplishment for them, and the start of their working and personal relationship.
- I love it when Neal shows up at Mozzie's lair and finds Diana and a baby. That had to be a surprise.
- Poor Peter is so tired.
- I'm glad Diana decided to give Mozzie and Neal a break. But I hope the fact that she's keeping their secret doesn't become an issue down the line.
- I love that she named the baby Theo. Baby Theo definitely wins for having an interesting start to life (and an interesting namesake).
- Yeah, Neal, I don't think this thing with Hagen is going to be over so easily, either.
- At this point, I'm starting to wonder more about the direction the next few episodes will take. I'm under the impression that Siegel isn't a long-term addition to the show, so I wonder--what will happen to make him leave? And I wonder at this point if Peter will actually end up staying in the ASAC position or not. I'll be kind of sad if he doesn't, because it's a promotion he really deserves. But I wonder if the show is going in the direction where he'll decide he misses being a field agent and isn't really comfortable with the distance he's created in order to become the new boss. Also, as we've seen, his new position is pretty tiring. Lots of paperwork and long days, it seems. I wonder if Peter's arc this season is deciding that the "success" isn't what he really wants.
