White Collar 5x04
Nov. 7th, 2013 10:04 pmLoved this episode! So many interesting things going on, and it felt like a cross between an H/C fic and a crack fic.
- Interesting that Neal is on house arrest. It kind of makes sense (he's technically a convict who's only allowed out to work for the FBI, and he's not working at the moment), but it's not something that's ever happened before. When Peter got demoted to Evidence, Neal didn't seem to have any sort of official handler, but he kept working under the vague supervision of Diana and Jones. I guess this is part of Peter trying to take a firmer, more official approach to handling Neal.
- Poor Neal. House arrest in June's house isn't exactly torture, but with Mozzie around? Yikes.
- I love that Mozzie is wearing that shower cap thing. He really doesn't need it. :P
- Mis-incarcerated. I'm not sure I see Mozzie winning any prison pageants. Neal could, though.
- So, what does Neal like less, house arrest or accounting scams? I love Peter's exasperation.
- I like Griffith. He seems like a decent guy.
- I love that Neal keeps ID photos in his wallet, just in case he has to fake something. :P And I like Peter warning him to watch his fingers while he's cutting.
- Peter does a good scary boss. Nice of Neal to recommend him for the role--I guess he's convinced that Peter can do bad cop now (and not just mildly-irritated cop).
- I love Peter and Neal's little con on the psychiatrist. Love Neal having Peter list Neal's charges like they're accomplishments, and I love Peter's little "I didn't hear that" when Neal alludes to having stolen money.
- The session with the psychiatrist is intense. I think she gets to him a little, even without the drugs. I think Neal isn't really used to being questioned that much--he's good at deflecting. And once the drugs kick in, Neal looks so freaked out.
- I have a hard time believing that Mozzie has an actual connection to the working girls of Rio, unless he ran a con with them.
- More wine is Mozzie's solution to everything.
- Mozzie looks way too excited by the idea of making drugs.
- Drugged!Neal is awesome. It's a perfect mix of woobie Neal and silly Neal.
- Poor Neal is really freaking out over his criminality. And Mozzie seems pretty affected by Neal's words to him, though it's tough to tell what Mozzie is thinking.
- LOL at drugged!Neal on the loose.
- Neal is really hyper when he's on stimulants.
- I liked how he called called Peter and Elizabeth "Burkes." And jabbed his fingers in Peter's chest. Hyper, drugged up Neal is fun to watch.
- LOL at Neal confessing to crimes. And comparing an art theft to some money he stole as a kid. Part of me is surprised to think of Neal stealing stuff as a kid, since he wanted to be a cop so bad. But...it is Neal. He's easily tempted.
- Oh, and Peter's being very sneaky trying to get an answer about Siegel out of him. Interesting that Peter suspects something is up--he obviously knows that Neal is hiding something, but there hasn't really been anything to connect Neal to Siegel's death. At least not that I know of.
- Yes, Mozzie, I'm sure those wrist curls will help you carry Neal back to his apartment.
- Neal is incredibly adorable sleeping on the sofa. And Peter taking care of him, covering him with a blanket--it's like an H/C fic. A cute one. I think I need some fic about Neal spending the night on the sofa. I'm sure fandom will provide.
- I really like the scene in Griffith's home. Peter takes down Jacoby like a boss.
- Even though they can't prove Neal drugged the psychiatrist, this still seems like one of the less legal resolutions they've had. Even if she actually did drug herself, I'd imagine a defense attorney could really bring that confession into question. And if she claims she was actually drugged by an FBI criminal consultant who was trying to get a confession out of her, that makes it even less sound. I wish they'd come up with a resolution that was more...legally sound. And less creepy. But I can see why they wanted to go with the drug thing, since it was Neal turning the tables on her.
- I was really surprised by Neal stealing the money and giving it to Mozzie. I think this is the first time during the course of the show that Neal has intentionally stolen something purely for personal gain/because he wanted to. He's been implicated in thefts, and he's stolen things after other people have put him up to it, but I don't think we've seen him decide to take something just because he wanted to and saw a chance to help out a friend. I kind of like it. Throughout the show, most of Neal's crimes have been altruistic (The Portrait), desperate (stealing the music box to get Kate back), or manipulated (like the times he's been blackmailed, or even when Mozzie stole the Nazi treasures). I think a lot of this is probably to make him a sympathetic character. But Neal clearly does enjoy conning and thieving, and it's kind of fun to see him indulge in that a little. It's also fun to see him rebelling an exerting his independence. Though it'd be more fun if Peter ended up spanking rebel!Neal.
- At least since Neal stole the money, Mozzie will be out of his hair. That might count as a desperate motive. :P
- I'm excited about next week--Neal makes a very cute butler.

Date: 2013-11-08 04:16 pm (UTC)Remember in On the Fence, he stole the scarab off of Raquel's workbench, for no clear reason other than it was there.
He also kept 10% of the take from his winning poker game in In the Red (which I firmly believe he was entitled to, he was playing after all).

Date: 2013-11-08 11:31 pm (UTC)I thought of the poker money, but I've always seen that more as Neal messing with Peter than a genuine attempt at keeping the money. He probably felt entitled to it, but I think he expected Peter to notice and take it back.
