Sherlock

My favorite thing about the third episode:

Sherlock shooting up the wall of his flat at the beginning. I don't know why, but that's the one "eccentric Sherlock Holmes trait" I immediately remember when I think of the stories. Maybe it's a weird thing to remember, but it was a neat homage to the original stories, I thought.

There were some other references I liked, too, like the twist on the five orange pips. Though I was a little disappointed, with the Bohemian paper and Sherlock's assertion that a woman had addressed the envelope, that this episode didn't bring in Irene Adler. I hope that when there are new episodes, they have Irene Adler.

Don't know the original stories well enough to make a useful comment, but I did also like the 'pips' thing and the shooting of the wall (and I didn't know the latter was original canon.)

This show does have a tendency to jump between completely updated modern version and throw-back to the twenties feel. Oh well. I can live with it if there's more eps like the last one.

Who's Irene Adler?

I haven't read all the stories, and it's been several years since I've read the ones I've read (watching the show has made me want to read them some more). For some reason, one of my more distinct memories of the stories is that in one of them, Watson talks about Holmes shooting up the walls as a hobby.

I actually like the "old" feel to parts of the show, at least when it's done well. I really enjoy the music for that reason. Sometimes it reminds me of a period piece.

Irene Adler was a character in the story "A Scandal in Bohemia." She was pretty smart and cool, and fully capable of outwitting Holmes. She was only in that one story, but she's a memorable character. "A Scandal in Bohemia" was my introduction to Sherlock Holmes, so I'm partial to it.

The music, yes, is rather fabulous. It suits this incarnation and yet also feels old-fashioned. Lovely stuff. There is a certain something about the way they dash about town.

Currently I'm rereading some of my favourite Christie novels, so I know the feeling. These introductory ones never let you go, do they? :)
