Hmmm... so, my hair is too shaggy to look professional (not that I need it to look professional at the moment), too long for short spikes, too long on the sides to be be short, but too short to be truly shaggy, and too short for me to comb it back.

So basically, I can't do much with it. Of course, nothing new there. I don't have the gene for being able to do shit with my hair that actually looks good. Plus, I have no idea what guys do with their hair, so I'm at a disadvantage already. Though, I have learned that putting massive amounts of gel and pomade in my hair =/= styling.

I keep thinking that I want a super short cut, like a buzz cut, because for someone who has a bit of a thing for hair on other people, and who has no problem with having a bit of body hair and who used to have hair down to my butt, I've gotten seriously weird about having as little hair on my head as possible. But I also realize that I don't really like buzz cuts, and that guys whose styles I like tend to have slightly longer hair. So I'm trying to be reasonable.

Ugh. I'm weird about my hair.

I hear you on the hair crisis. Mine only looks properly good when I can get to see my hairdresser friend, but he lives at the other side of the country so it's few and far between (but amazing how much of a difference it makes when he gives me a proper boy's haircut instead of when I self-haircut and just hack it off - and suddenly I pass like whoa).

My vibe is short on the sides, longer on top, with product - I think the neatest way I do it myself is to get clippers and use one of the longer settings on the side, then attack the top with scissors. Otherwise I end up looking a bit like a mental patient who got into the sharp things.

Yeah, I like the short on the sides, longer on the top idea. I think I need to go more that route. I kind of want to give myself a faux-hawk.

I should look into getting my own clippers and trying my hand at it, too. I have a hard time saying what I want when I go to get my hair cut. I don't really know all the terminology, and I've never had a stylist that I had good rapport with, so it's hard for me to make sure that they realize I want a man's cut. And I'm so pathetic with haircuts that I can't even tell if it looks "right" or not. :/

I've never dared go to a proper hairdresser and ask for a boy's cut, I feel like it would be so awkward, and then I'd be sat there having to talk to them - or in awkward awful silence - while they did the deed. I'm lucky to have a trans guy hairdresser friend, I just wish he lived a bit closer. Do you have any local LGBT/trans groups you're in touch with in the area? Someone might be able to recommend you a queer friendly hairdresser, I guess.

Faux-hawk ftw! That would be awesome. And hey if it all goes horribly wrong, then you can go the buzzcut route. It'll always grow again.

That's cool you have a friend who can help you out. I felt way too awkward back when I had a regular stylist, but lately I've been going to a walk-in chain place where you get a different stylist almost every time, and it's pretty impersonal. But there's a down side to that, too, because I'm not that great at succinctly, bravely, and accurately describing what I want. So I'm still at the mercy of their assumptions a bit.

That's a good tip to get in touch with an LGBT/trans group. I actually belong to a mailing list for a local group, so maybe I'll pose the question and see if anyone can refer me. Good idea!

You are so not weird about your hair -- this is every conversation I ever had with myself about hair, like, ever. Except maybe for the buzzcut -- I've thought about getting one but never did. (Though I had it at about an inch and a half for a while.) Now it's grown all the way down my back again. I can style it, but I, like you, lack the gene for that to turn out good :).

Glad it's not just me!

I think I have two problems when it comes to styling: One, I can't do it. Two, sometimes I get it in my head that I can. The results are always really bad. :P
