Growing up, I watched a lot of Nick at Nite, so a lot of my favorite shows have held up well over the years. That 1960s Batman show feels a lot dorkier today, but stuff like Taxi and I Love Lucy and The Mary Tyler Moore show hold up really well.

The actual kid's shows I watched when I was a kid are a mixed bag. The cartoons I liked, I mostly still find enjoyable today. But so many of the live action shows are so different to me now. I think the age of the characters plays a big role in that. I remember seeing the preteen characters on shows like The Secret World of Alex Mack or Wishbone as being really mature, and now they just look young. And I was able to see a few old episodes of Wishbone, and I was really surprised at how simplified the stories seemed.

But I don't think anything looks as different to me now as Are You Afraid of the Dark? With Teen Nick showing some of the old 90s shows, I've been able to see some episodes and...wow.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? really scared me when I was a little kid. So much so that while there wasn't an official rule, my mom strongly discouraged me from watching it. That show is the reason I never closed my bedroom door (I wanted to be able to escape from any ghosts that came after me). I think it also played a role in why I used to sleep with the sheet pulled all the way up to my chin (to discourage vampires).

For some context, I grew up watching action movies with my dad. Rambo and Die Hard didn't scare me. This show did.

Watching it now, it seems so silly. The stories are often predictable and aren't all that spooky or suspenseful. To be fair, some of them are a little spooky. But not as much as my memory gives them credit for. I almost wish I didn't rewatch any of it. My memories of the show were so much more badass.
