Funny, the things I remember....
Jul. 14th, 2012 11:27 pmI went off on a mental tangent a little while ago, and ended up remembering when I watched The X-Files as a kid in the mid to late '90s, and how cool and novel it seemed to me that Mulder and Scully had cell phones. I remember that being a big deal to me at the time, how they were always calling each other and communicating that way.
One year, my parents got me the Scully and Mulder Barbie and Ken dolls as a Christmas present (which is, to date, probably the coolest fandom-related thing I've had), and my cousin even made a point of asking me if the dolls came with cell phones (alas, they did not). I wasn't watching enough TV at that time to know if cell phones were getting to be a more common thing in pop culture or not. I just know The X-Files was apparently one of the first times I saw fictional characters using them. My family certainly wasn't using them at that point -- my mom had one, but it was this behemoth thing that she had to make a special tote bag for.
These days, I can't think of any shows I've watched that take place in modern-day U.S. where the characters don't use cell phones. At this point, I take it for granted.
