White Collar episode 4x02
Jul. 19th, 2012 11:08 pmNow that I've got my i_reversebang fic finished and posted, and my workload is a little lighter, I feel like I can write up a reaction post with a clear conscience.
On a personal note, watching WC these past couple weeks has made me really glad I booked an appointment with my eye doctor. I haven't watched the TV in my living room much since Fringe and Supernatural's seasons ended. So...mid-May, I guess. I think my eyes must have gotten even worse in that time, because sitting more than a few feet from the screen now involves lots of squinting.
But anyway, onto the episode:
- Find it kind of odd that Dobbs has a jail cell in his basement. Was it there when he moved in, or does he make a habit of imprisoning people in his home? In any case, I admit to being a little excited that this was the point where Neal ends up bound and gagged in a cell. Saw clips of it in a season four promo and it made me very curious.
- Can't believe Collins actually shot him. Well, okay, I believe it. Collins is a jerk. It was a surprise, though. I felt bad for Neal. :(
- I love Mozzie and Peter working together so well.
- Speaking of Mozzie, he seems a little less neurotic. Maybe the island climate has had a calming effect on him?
- Another random Mozzie observation: he wears a lot of rings. Noticed in the last couple episodes, but I think he does it in previous seasons, too. I just...find that interesting. He doesn't seem like a big jewelry guy, but he likes rings.
- Mozzie also has a lot of good quips in this episode. I love how he says "Oh, welcome to the club" when Neal tells him he's been shot. He sounds so cheerful. And I love how says "Did he get into the rum?" when Peter is reciting the mnemonic about Dobbs'...girlfriends or whoever they are.
- Where are they hiding out while they plan the con against Dobbs? It doesn't look like Neal's house, and wouldn't that be too risky, anyway?
- Again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised at the pace the plot is moving, especially after last week. But I was honestly surprised that they put a plan in motion to get Neal back to New York so quickly. I think I was expecting them to get Collins off Neal's back and then worry about getting him on the FBI's good side again.
- Oh, and I guess the whole thing about Neal going back to prison for the rest of his life if he runs is definitely negotiable. I was honestly wondering about that. I was half-wondering if they were going to try to con the FBI into thinking Neal didn't actually run, though I guess that would have been a stretch.
- Wow, Peter makes a really suave bartender. He's kind of sexy, actually. I love how he sort of blunders through bartender training with Neal and Mozzie, only to pull it off like a boss.
- I can't believe how much Neal walks around. And he climbs a tree. With a gunshot wound in his leg. Ow.
- Okay, I'll be honest: I'm not totally clear how the setup with the painting of the empty safe and the mirrors was originally supposed to work. Were they banking on the sheriff peeking into the room but not actually going in? The painting is really cool, though!
- I knew Maya wasn't really selling Neal out! Peter totally left that glass for Collins to find, so he could trace to her and she could do her part in the con. I enjoyed her presence a little more in this episode since she played a bigger role.
- But...Mozzie has to come back to New York! I hope he's not away for too long.
- Love how Collins actually becomes marginally useful at the end. He and Dobbs deserve each other.
- I really like Ellen. But why do I have ominous feelings about her future? And why do I suspect her plan to tell Neal everything is going to get derailed somehow? Also, this plot reminds me of last season of Hawaii Five-0 a little....
- Regarding Neal's picture of Maya: I'm stupidly pleased by how there seems to be some continuity regarding the style of Neal's "real" art. The drawing of Maya looks pretty much like the same style as the drawing of the woman in "Veiled Threat" to me. And it was recently brought to my attention that there's some artwork in Mozzie's safe house in "Dentist of Detroit" that appears to be in the same style. I don't know--I just love how there's some consistency.
- Whenever the main plot of an episode ends with more than a few minutes to spare, I always expect some sort of twist to happen.
- Even though I was expecting it, I'm sad about Peter being reassigned. :( Partially because I'm about ready for a more run-of-the-mill case episode. With the major plot stuff that's going on, the season hasn't really gotten into a rhythm yet, and it's hard to even tell what the rhythm will be, exactly (last season, the conflict about the missing treasure really affected the season as a whole, for example). I don't think I expect Peter's transfer to last long, though. And at least it seems he's staying in New York. It'll be interesting to see what happens next week.

I just assumed it was a valuables cage for big stuff that couldn’t fit in the safe. Because that also begs the question of why was there a jail cell in a fashion office where Keller was keeping Peter in season 2.
Where are they hiding out while they plan the con against Dobbs? It doesn't look like Neal's house, and wouldn't that be too risky, anyway?
I was thinking Mozzie's or Mozzie's safehouse. Even in paradise I assume he had one.
I love Mozzie and Peter working together so well.
Peter and Mozzie, they work together really well, always have in my opinion. They are very similar types of people with opposite methods and they come together to co-parent Neal. Neal is why they work together and Neal is why they won’t ever really be friends.
Can't believe Collins actually shot him. Well, okay, I believe it. Collins is a jerk. It was a surprise, though. I felt bad for Neal. :( - I can't believe how much Neal walks around. And he climbs a tree. With a gunshot wound in his leg. Ow
I think I’m way to into ‘what happening behind the scenes” cause I wonder if Matt Bomer twisted his ankle and they decided to make it more of a plot point by making Colin’s more psycho…. Which I felt was inconsistent with him being reasonable at the plane. I thought they were having him shoot Neal so that when Dobbs decided to kill Collins in the end, no one would care. But without that, it just seemed like it was an excuse not to have Matt able to move around like he normally would.
- Okay, so the safe thing was supposed to work like they had it work but without it. Packing up the office had the same effect. So needlessly complicated, they're improve worked just as well. The Sheriff would see the safe, then Neal would distracted them by what he did at the party. They needed to get Dobbs to run.
- I don't know why but I don't think Mozzie is going to be gone at all. I just assume he'll turn up in the next episode.
This season is all supposed to be about Neal's past, which is interesting. If they hadn't talked about his mother I would assume Ellen was but we'll see.

Date: 2012-07-20 09:08 pm (UTC)I'm waiting to see how it goes, though. I'm actually sort of expecting Peter to be reinstated by the end of next episode, but I'm not confident.
I hear you on finding stuff more tolerable if you know how they'll end. I think it was Torchwood and COE that made me really embrace spoilers. I pretty much knew what was going to happen in WC season three since I watched it after it'd aired. Even then, though, I found it kind of nerve-wracking and wasn't sure how I felt about it at the time. Not just because of how the season ended, but because the tension between Peter and Neal affected the tone of the season so much. But now, in retrospect, there's a lot about season three that I like.
- I could buy the jail cell in the fashion office a little more. I figured Keller had planned everything out pretty thoroughly.
- You're right. Mozzie would almost certainly have a safe house.
- Yeah, I like your insight on Peter and Mozzie. They can be very similar and with Neal in the middle, they're torn between trusting each other and not being able to trust each other. I've always like that Neal has a mentor/parent figure for both sides of his life.
- I didn't think about the shooting being a behind-the-scenes fix, but that could actually make sense. I thought it was weird that the shooting didn't actually affect the plot much. It affected the escape plan a little bit, but not in any significant way.
- Yeah, I understood what they ended up doing with clearing out the office. But the set-up with the mirrors seemed to rely on no on actually going into the room or getting too close to the safe, which seemed a little risky to me. I think clearing out the room may have been safer, actually. The chances that Dobbs would have had a chance to open the real safe before Neal could distract them were slim.
- I don't think Mozzie is gone for good, but I have no idea how soon he'll be back. I expect he'll turn up in New York sooner rather than later, though.
- It will be interesting to learn more about Neal's past. That's another reason why I'm sort of expecting Peter to be reinstated in the white collar unit before long. It seems like the major arc of this season is all about Neal's past and his family, so I'm not expecting them to spend a lot of time on other multi-episode plot lines.

Date: 2012-07-20 09:38 pm (UTC)So I think one episode more to resolve Peter, so things aren't 'too easy' and then back to the status quo and onto the Neal family plot. LOL.
So on a mild Mozzie spoiler front, the IMDB summary for next weeks episode is "Neal, Peter, and Mozzie track down a sly thief long sought by the FBI." So unless it's a mistake, he's not going to be gone at all.

Date: 2012-07-20 11:26 pm (UTC)Kramer's plan didn't seem very solid, no. If Neal wasn't convicted for all of his crimes the first time around, how did Kramer expect to get a conviction? I don't think Peter even has evidence for a lot of what Neal's done.
LOL, good point about IMDB! I keep forgetting to look there for spoilers. Yeah, that, coupled with some other spoilers I've seen, does indicate that Mozzie isn't gone.
