My mom and I don't have that similar of tastes when it comes to shows and movies. But I like being able to talk about shows. So on the occasions when my mom gets into something that I find enjoyable, I tend to get interested in it, too.
My mom has gotten really into Downton Abbey. She decided to start watching it when season 3 premiered here in the U.S. a few weeks ago. I decided to give it a try, and now we're both pretty into it and have been catching up on the first two seasons together. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't get into the show quite as much if my mom wasn't watching it. I'm not into it like I am with With Collar, for example. But I do enjoy it a lot, so it's fun. And it turns out my mom and I are similarly-minded when it comes to spoilers (that is, we both like to seek them out), so we're a pretty good match when it comes to discussing stuff.
I don't think my mom is quite to the point of trawling Tumblr or AO3, but I have used my fandom abilities to find some informational sites for her, to help keep plots and characters straight.
