I...don't actually like to complain about LJ, because, I don't know, I generally see the best in people? They seem to mean well? But I don't think I've ever seen a site that implemented so many (well-intentioned?) changes without fully thinking them through or paying attention to what people would want.

I mean, I can get behind anti-spam measures, at least to an extent. Especially optional ones. But wouldn't it be nice if we'd been told sooner that comments with non-whitelisted links get screened by default now? I mean, that could have cleared up a lot of confusion I've been witnessing on a few comms recently, for real. And apparently some comm maintainers aren't even able to access the screened comments. Oh, LJ...

(Note: You can turn off the feature by going into your settings and then "Privacy.")

I freely criticize LJ! I don't think they're entirely well intentioned. I get the feeling their attitude is: 'just implement this to shut them up - oh, that's not working out so well, maybe we should have thought about this'. I wish I could convince more people to mirror/move their comms to DW.

It's been more than a year since I've refused to give LJ any money. I don't have a paid account and I won't even buy extra icons. Ever since the auto-cross posting of comments to people's FB without permission fiasco, I've refused to give them money. I keep thinking they view their users with contempt.

Well, truthfully, I did know about this planned implementation before it happened, since LJ does actually solicit feedback and announces these things. The problem is that most people don't follow the places where they do. Sometimes things go wrong because LJ doesn't inform people, but not in this case.

As for websites who do this... the biggest perpetrator of implementation without due conversation about it would be the AO3, which never solicits feedback about what people might not want and implements things because a handful have said they would like it. But that could be my personal bee-in-bonnet :).

Might have missed something. I do tend to follow these things, but the earliest real announcement I saw from LJ on it was April 19th, which was a while after I learned about it from comm maintainers having to fix their settings. There were some mentions of it in the code releases, but it didn't seem to reflect the actual change? Unless I read it wrong.

Haven't really followed AO3's changes much, to be honest. They would likely annoy me more if I did.

I heard about it during the whole 'no one is getting their comments' business (at the end of it, I think) as a stop gap measure to prevent being listed as spam. It was a pretty rapid implementation, though, more rapid than LJ usually goes for.
